Here, under the Andalucian sun
Back in 2020 the decision was taken to gradually transition from propagating and growing winter resistant waterlilies, (something that I had been engaged in for over 40 years, previously owning a 5 hectare aquatic nursery in England), to propagating tropical waterlilies to fulfill an obvious gap within the European market.
Our unique micro climate here on the Costa del Sol (the Southernmost point of the European mainland) was perfect, being the only place in Europe where Tropical waterlilies could live outdoors, in natural conditions, year round. Our growing season here extends from late March into October giving us a tremendous advantage, at zero heating cost.
We were very aware of all the problems with the losses involved with Asian imports, and, as time went by, also all the additional, continually rising, costs of air freight and phytosanitary regulations and associated tests involved.
We also were very aware of the difficulties, potential losses, and costs, of over wintering tropical waterlilies in Northern Europe having been there and done it ourselves in the past.
Consequently, we proceeded, slowly, to set ourselves up as a European (Spanish) alternative to imports, the intention being to make selling tropical waterlilies less problematical for resellers in the rest of Europe
So, here we are today, steadily being able to take on more clients as our base stock grows. We do not import anything, every variety is propagated and grown on site here on the Costa del Sol, overwintered outdoors, therefor as durable as is possible and readily adaptable for growing on further North.
We increased our varieties from 15 in 2020 to 68 varieties here in late 2025. The goal is to hold 100 varieties in our collection by mid 2027. Naturally, some are still in the holding back stage of building base root stock whilst others are readily available on a first come, first served basis, on a pre-order system that we have in place for registered clients.
Propagation operates on a continuous, rotating, cycle, April to October, to continually build up stock levels, but it can still take 3 years to build sufficient stock for resale, so, new varieties take time, but always come online eventually. Consequently our reseller clients can always be sure that they will always have something new to offer their customers year on year.
